Why Family is Important When Building a Business

October 2024

Family

When I started building Growlio, I thought the hustle meant sacrificing everything else. Late nights, missed dinners, weekends spent debugging instead of being present. I was wrong.

The truth is, family isn't a distraction from building—it's the foundation that makes building sustainable. Here's what I've learned after 6 years of shipping products while trying to be a present family member.

Family Forces You to Set Boundaries

When you have people depending on you to show up—really show up—you can't work 16-hour days indefinitely. This constraint is actually a gift. It forces you to prioritize ruthlessly, to say no to things that don't matter, and to build systems instead of just grinding.

They Keep You Grounded

Startups are emotional rollercoasters. One day you're closing a big deal, the next you're questioning everything. Family doesn't care about your MRR or your conversion rates. They care about you. That perspective is invaluable when the business feels like it's consuming your identity.

Your "Why" Becomes Clearer

Building for the sake of building gets exhausting. But building to create a better life for your family? That's fuel that doesn't run out. Every feature shipped, every customer helped—it all connects to something bigger than yourself.

The Balance Myth

I don't believe in perfect work-life balance. Some weeks, the business needs more. Some weeks, family needs more. What matters is the long game—being intentional about where your energy goes and not letting either side feel neglected for too long.

If you're building something and feeling guilty about taking time for family, stop. They're not holding you back. They're the reason any of this matters in the first place.
